23 Universities host ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camps

Posted by BJ Goergen, NMSI Chief of Staff

NMSI is proud to point out that this summer, 23 university locations -- including Howard University, Oregon State University, University of Southern California, Rennselaer Polytechnic, and the University of Virginia -- are hosting the 2008 ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camps from June through August. Sponsored by former astronaut Bernard Harris and the ExxonMobil Foundation, the free, two-week residential camps will bring innovative programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to more than 1,200 middle school students . During the camp, the students will attend daily classes to expand their knowledge in the STEM subjects that are so critical to our nation's future. The classes are taught by the faculty of the participating universities and secondary classroom teachers. Young people who are academically qualified are recommended by their teachers to attend these fun and educational camps free of charge.  Dr. Harris is a member of the NMSI board.  He was the first African American to walk in space and is President and Founder of the Harris Foundation, Inc., which was created to enable youth to develop and achieve their full potential through the support of social, recreational and educational programs for grades K thru 12.
