NMSI Spotlighted in Reader's Digest |
|
POSTED BY B.J. Goergen, Chief of Staff NMSI:
The August issue of Reader’s Digest includes a positive mention of NMSI in the “Big Idea/Small Detail” section on page 22.
It begins with this quote from Edward B. Fiske, former education editor of The New York Times: “American students may not know as much as their (Pacific Rim) counterparts, but our society allows them to make better use of what they do know. The question now is whether this historic advantage will suffice at a time when knowledge of math, science and technology is critical. Maybe we need both the enabling environment and more rigor in these areas.”
The quote is followed by the recommendation: “The National Math and Science Initiative gives grants to schools to implement proven programs that can, over five years, quadruple the number of kids passing exams in AP math and quintuple the number passing AP science exams. Go to nationalmathandscience.org and find out about tutoring, donating and other ideas. Urge your school to apply.”
We appreciate the Reader’s Digest passing the word along about NMSI – especially considering that it is still the best-selling consumer magazine in U.S., with a circulation of more than 10 million that reaches an overall readership of 38 million.
