Why math and science? Math and science are increasingly the passport to careers that can sustain families as well as to keep American competitive in today’s global marketplace. Mechanics today need higher skills to succeed in more sophisticated auto maintenance. Nurses need math and science to utilize today’s medical technology. Computer programmers are leading the way to new industries. Well-trained engineers are essential to virtually every aspect of the economy – and national security. Everyone from the stock trading floor to the wholesale grocery business needs more advanced computational skills, not just to succeed, but to survive.
To move forward, our nation’s workers must have employable skills. And to flourish in the 21st century, the United States must continue to generate intellectual capital that can fuel the research and development that is essential for future prosperity and security. |
