History

The National Math and Science Initiative, Inc. (NMSI) was formed following a report issued in 2005 by the National Academies entitled "Rising Above the Gathering Storm." The title aptly reflects the urgency of the problem and the need for a solution.

NMSI was created to implement the recommendations of the report, which calls for dramatically improving K-12 math and science education. NMSI functions as a strategic holding company, bringing proven operating and scale-up capabilities to help grantees replicate effective educational programs to improve American competitiveness, including training and incentive programs for AP* and pre-AP courses.

For the past year, NMSI has been awarding grants in multiple states across the country in an attempt to scale-up the two founding programs, AP and UTeach. Well beyond the theory stage, the NMSI grants are at work in many schools today with great results.

The response NMSI has received from across the country has been remarkable. Their interest in our approach tells me they believe in the potential of NMSI and are eager to improve math and science performance.”

-Tom Luce, CEO NMSI
