In today’s competitive economy, the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math fields is widely recognized in the U.S. and abroad. “Labs Are Vital” is a program aimed to address the shortage that clinical laboratories are facing. According to the organization, only two new clinical laboratory scientists enter the field for every seven facing retirement.

Sponsored by Abbott Laboratories, Labs Are Vital is starting an initiative on Facebook to reach out to more than four million students to engage those interested in life science. Labs Are Vital is utilizing the popular social networking site as a tool to educate high school and college students about career opportunities in the clinical laboratory science profession. The Facebook page will inform students about benefits and challenges of the profession with insights from their peers. Students also will have the opportunity to enter a scholarship contest.
